Although the link below leads you to a rather dated journal (1999) on smart home technology, the articles themselves are still quite relevant. Smart home technology is not new, it has a rather rich history dating back at least 25 years. In 1999 IBM was on the cutting edge of smart home technology, or at least from a theoretical if not always a technical perspective, suggesting that pervasive technology was the way of the future. That future is here and now and although there is a long way to go when it comes to technical "coordination" (universal apps for example) many of IBM's ideas were not far off.
